Help Keep the Blog Running

Running the blog takes a good amount of scratch. If you find the time and effort I put in to finding stuff for the blog or facebook, any donations to offset the costs are appreciated. Five or $10 can go a long way. Thanks, Chris Spangle.

I Hate Politics

by Chris Spangle ~ March 26th, 2009

Because of my time working with Abdul, I operate with certain assumptions. Most elected officials, media types, and lobbyists are not bad people. They are sincere. They think what they do is generally right, and the best course of action. They also spend a tremendous amount of time with each other, and are friendly. It makes it difficult to criticize friends. They also have tremendous prejudices towards certain groups.

The folks that gathered yesterday are met with distrust because they are new. They aren’t dressed the same, they have no law degrees, they lack the same knowledge of the workings of the establishment, and have little desire to do so. They just want to stop getting screwed.

Here is why I hate politics.

Instead of the two groups actually talking to each other yesterday, the media, the lobbyists, and some elected officials hung out on the fringes and mocked the protestors.

They never listened to the presentations. They didn’t engage anyone. They just mocked, and tried to dig up evidence of their own pre-judgments. They did not talk to Jerry Titus, Dave Bond, Paul Ogden, or any of the serious, thoughtful people that were asking thier government to do better. They pointed out the kooks and laughed.

I was interviewed by Jim Shella, whom I respect. He ran a great piece at Noon. The 6 PM news was a disgrace. Instead of using my minute long quote on why people were gathered, and why they were angry, Shella used the end of my statement where I lost my train of thought. Immediately after that quote, I stopped talking, and ended the interview. He was cruel towards the Campaign for Liberty woman. He clearly took a comment from one of the speakers totally out of context. He clearly had an agenda, and found tape to support it. It was very disappointing.

I’m not going to take leaps. I won’t ever say that any journalist has been bought off, because I don’t think they are. The shame is that some journalists, lobbyists, and elected officials will ever sit down with Paul Ogden. They won’t take the time to talk to Melyssa. They won’t give Dave Bond the time of day. They have no idea who Jerry Titus is. (No offense Jerry, it isn’t your fault.)

If people in the “establishment” are tired of being mocked and ridiculed by bloggers and protestors, and eventually voters/viewers, I have a suggestion. Open your mind and have lunch with them. Hear their concerns. I always tried to do this at WXNT. The people that aren’t in ties and suits are just as serious about their government as you are.

Politics isn’t war. It’s about dialogue. If you think it’s war, and your side is always right, then you are wrong.

Average people from all walks of life aren't as savy in public speaking or the ways of the media. They're not suppossed to be. They're suppossed to do their average job and expect that their elected representatives are doing theirs. When our elected representatives DON't do their jobs. We have to take time away from our jobs, families, etc., to make it clear that we're unhappy. The "journalism" of this city, the suppossed even-handed reporters reporting "Just the facts, Ma'am", are going to sit in judgement of average people who took the time to show-up and say, "Hey! We got a problem here"? Worse, they're going to take their event coverage and selectively edit it to purvey their personal attitude. To convey, "Oh, in case you didn't notice, this person I'm interviewing is not as verbally nimble, well-dressed, or respected in the community as ME, ME, ME!".
    .
I didn't know of a single reason to think poorly of Jim Shella before. But, after watching an hour of the gathering, hearing the speakers, and having heard Chris Spangle speak many, many times before- this was an agenda in search of selective editing. I believe I can successfully continue to not frequent WISH-Channel 8 advertisers or donate to WFYI-Channel 20.
  • Why respect Shella? Has he earned that respect? Respect doesn't come for free. He has only earned my scorn.

Wow! How did I miss such a thoughtful, rational blog post? This was very well written and you hit the nail right on its head.
  • Excellent post Chris!!

Indiana really needs to know what talented people we have.... the talent displayed among the collection of blogs that this movement has blows away anything the States MSM has to offer.

And thanks for the plugs! I owe you two beers :).

    Libertas!!

  • I still love ya, little guy! :-)
  • Thanks Guys.
  • Awesome, I would point out that most of the speakers at the rallyare Republicans at the ally. Demcorats had the second most speakers. Libertarians only had one, Melyssa, who only spoke briefly. The moderator was a Libertarian.

But, hey, let's not let facts get in the way, right.
  • Just read this. Thanks, so much for your comments, Chris. You are on spot with your observations.
  • I think this is one of the best, heart-felt and true posts I've seen here. It really hit a nerve with me. The hook, line and sinker for me was the statement in the opening paragraph: They also have tremendous prejudices towards certain groups.". I fear you alluded to the 'certain groups' in that same paragraph but for some reason you didn't have the onions (or perhaps too much tact) to say it directly: they don't trust those that are not in their group of lobbyists, elected officials and members of the media.

You subtly went down the path of blaming the attendees for their appearance, education or what-not to gain their trust (and hope they'll read further) and then let them know we're just as serious as they are. Great closing!

What you didn't make clear was that WE HOLD THE KEYS TO THEIR FUTURE! But then again, I don't think they believe it. And why would they?

It's ironic that it is those that they mistrust the most, are the ones that elect them and pay them.

You are damn poetic and so correct that politics is 100% about dialogue. Currently, the dialogue you dream of consists of us checking a box on a ballot; and not much else. Yet, we still elect the same D or R clowns. D or R, the story never changes, does it? They will only listen when they're unemployed and out of power.

Perhaps that will bring them down to our level. Perhaps as our public servants, they will have gotten too fat for that fancy suit.

Anonymous smug remarks and logical fallacies sure are fun on 'teh internets'. Cantankerous folk love leavin' da comments. I suppose it's better than the Red Team vs. Blue Team nonsense on most political news stories. I think we should stage an airing of grievances cage match in the spirit of Festivus. Keep up the good work Chris. As for the naysayers - well, as the great Lebowski once said, "f--k it, dude..it's just, like, their opinion, man". By the way, PREPARE FOR MY ARRIVAL (in my best Darth Vader voice).

no sour grapes here...you are are buddies at the ILBA and the Libertarian Party, i.e., Ed Coleman, Mr. party of one, got hammered at your cute little town hall...keep up the good work and please continue to encourage Mr. Coleman to be the face of the opposition for a stronger smoke-free workplace law...it makes the job of the supporters so much easier.

The media seems to be lacking any sort of managerial oversight. There was a time when the news directors of TV (for example) watched over their staff and even went on the air themselves to state their positions (anyone remember Bob Gamble on WFBM who did so at least once a week to close their newscasts?)

Today they seem to be freelancers using a station's microphone. There is no semblance of either objectivity or interest in getting to the bottom of any story. I don't think there's anyone managing them or requiring 100% effort from them.

They have in most cases 3x the air time to work with compared to the days of a 30 minute newscast. They sure don't provide 3 times the reporting.

You're an idiot. I didn't plan or organize either event. Go eat your sour grapes somewhere else.
  • awesome
what a great event you put on...great way to get your message out through the msm. Just like you did at your town hall with the ILBA...smoke-free indy did a great job countering your message don't you think? Oh yeah, you failed to get your message out - whatever that may have been. Two wasted opportunities in 2 weeks...I thought you had a background in media? Maybe you need to attend a media advocacy training?

good job chris--keep giving them hell!

Thank you Chris for your response.
This has turned into an excellent opportunity to people from all walks of life to join in our coalitions to hold our public servant's feet to the fire. I believe we have forged stronger relationships of trust and respect amongst members of our community and I have posted as series of my responses directly on WISH-TV's blog concerning the irresponsible and unethical expose of our event. http://www.topix.net/forum/source/wish/TKSJ86SHVDA5U4O78/p2#lastPost

"We mock what we don't understand" - someone.
    -
Chris, they can't understand that "common folk" are the ones with the real power because so many of them have never been "common folk". I have heard more rumblings from the Libertarians in the past two years than ever before. With the ability to blog and post it seems the message and organizational abilities are better than ever. Keep putting the word out and ADVERTISE YOUR BLOG, weather it is paid advertisement or just putting stickers on the windows of your car. People see a web address and they look at it just out of curiosity.

Keep up the good fight Chris.

And I dressed appropriately... suit and silk shirt and pearls. I know why they don't talk to me. Getting too close to the light scares them. They've all read what I did to that undercover cop and saw what happened to Peterson.

Hey Chris, good observations! This is partly why I dressed up in a full suit yesterday. I wanted to be taken seriously. I was rather disappointed that other people didn't do the same.
